Wegovy Weight Loss Medication – Semaglutide (Generic)

GLP-1 Agonist FDA Approved Weight Loss

The weight-loss drug Wegovy, the same drug as Semaglutide (generic), is described as a ‘game-changer’ for obesity. Semaglutide, the generic medication for Wegovy and other GLP – 1 agonist medications, are currently used for many years as treatment for Type 2 Diabetes.

Soon after these medications were introduced for Diabetes results showed dramatic weight loss for many. In fact when these medications were studied in non diabetic patients the weight loss results were just as dramatic maybe more so. However, whether someone has Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus or not the results from this family of medications is dramatic for helping people shed their weight.

Results

People report losing significant weight, increased feelings of fullness, reduced cravings for tempting food which may extend to reduced cravings for alcohol as well! Semaglutide(Wegovy) and other similar medications such as Saxenda, Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonists are indeed “game changers.”

In fact a new medication in this family was released in 2022 called Mounjaro. While it is not yet FDA approved for weight loss, only Type 2 diabetes, the FDA has fast tracked this medication for rapid approval to be used for obesity. So something to look out for in 2023.

Early studies indicate it maybe more effective for weight loss than other medications in this family. However as a whole the medications in this family called GLP-1 agonists are changing how we all look at weight and obesity including medical providers themselves. My hope is this will continue to decrease stigma with people who struggle with these conditions and all the other medical conditions that can be associate with being overweight or obese. This is the opinion as well of many medical professions who specialize in Obesity and its related conditions.
